Free Home Energy Assessment · Income-Eligible 100% Free · 14 Weatherization Services

Massachusetts Insulation — Often 100% Free.

Mass Save covers 75–100% of insulation cost in Massachusetts. Income-eligible homeowners get it free. Air sealing is often a free program lead-in. The Home Energy Assessment that unlocks every rebate is also free — and we run it for you.

Weatherization in Massachusetts is the most underused free money in the home services market. Mass Save covers 75% of insulation for standard-income homeowners and 100% for income-eligible households (under 60% of state median income). Air sealing is frequently completely free as a program lead-in. The Home Energy Assessment — the door that unlocks every rebate — costs nothing and takes 90 minutes. Yet most Massachusetts homeowners never apply. We run BPI- and RESNET-certified crews, file every Mass Save application on your behalf, and handle EPA RRP lead-safe protocols on every pre-1978 home.

Why Massachusetts Weatherization Is Strategic Money

Most home upgrades cost the homeowner. Weatherization in Massachusetts is the inverse: the program pays you to improve your home's envelope before you spend a dollar on heat pumps, central AC, or new windows. Three things make this market unlike anywhere else in the U.S.:

  1. Mass Save is funded by your utility bill. Every electric and gas customer pays a small surcharge that funds the program. You're already paying for it. Not using it = lighting your own money on fire.
  2. Income tier determines coverage, not project type. Standard-income: 75% off. Income-eligible (under 60% state median, ~$80–100K depending on family size): 100% free. Same insulation, same crew, same materials.
  3. Insulation before HVAC is the smart sequence. Mass Save also funds heat pumps — but a smaller, cheaper heat pump if your home is properly insulated first. Insulation can shrink your heat pump load 30–40%, which means a smaller system, smaller install cost, smaller electric bill forever.

Income Eligibility — Are You In?

Mass Save income eligibility uses 60% of Massachusetts state median income (SMI). As of (subject to annual update by Mass DOER):

  • Household of 2: under ~$80,000 annually = income-eligible
  • Household of 4: under ~$110,000 annually = income-eligible
  • Household of 6: under ~$140,000 annually = income-eligible

Income-eligible households get 100% free insulation, air sealing, weatherstripping, and most weatherization services. We help verify eligibility during the Home Energy Assessment — homeowner provides one tax document, program confirms within days.

Our 5-Step Mass Save Weatherization Process

  1. Free Home Energy Assessment. BPI-certified analyst, blower-door test, infrared camera scan, IAQ check. Free LEDs and weatherstripping installed during the visit.
  2. Income eligibility check. One tax document, Mass Save confirms within 3–5 business days. Determines whether you're at 75% or 100% coverage.
  3. Recommendation report. Written report ranks insulation/sealing upgrades by ROI. Mass Save rebate calculated for each line item.
  4. Install + program filing. We install, we file the rebate, you sign at completion. Income-eligible: zero out-of-pocket. Standard income: pay 25% balance only.
  5. Post-install verification. Mass Save sends a verifier (third-party) within 2 weeks. Optional second blower-door test confirms air-leakage reduction. Rebate finalized.

Cross-Trade Coordination

Weatherization unlocks the rest of the Mass Save program. We coordinate the sequence in-house so you don't lose stacking opportunities:

  • Weatherization → heat pump install. Insulating first shrinks the heat pump load 30–40% — smaller system, smaller install cost, smaller bills forever.
  • Weatherization → panel upgrade. Income-eligible homeowners frequently qualify for free panel upgrade alongside insulation when paired with electrification.
  • Weatherization → ENERGY STAR windows. Window rebates stack with insulation rebates. Replace and insulate as one project.
  • Asbestos found → asbestos removal first. Common in pre-1978 homes (pipe wrap, popcorn ceilings, vinyl asbestos tile). MA DEP-compliant abatement before any insulation work.

Our Weatherization Warranty

Mass Save rebate guarantee
If your install does not qualify for the Mass Save rebate amount we quoted, we credit the difference. Quoted = Received.

Weatherization FAQs

Massachusetts Mass Save Questions Answered.

Is the Mass Save Home Energy Assessment really free?

Yes — completely free, no catch. A BPI-certified analyst comes to your home, runs a blower-door test, identifies air leaks and insulation gaps, and installs free LEDs, weatherstripping, and low-flow showerheads on the spot. The 90-minute visit is the door to every other Mass Save rebate.

How much does Mass Save cover for insulation?

Standard-income households: 75% off insulation cost. Income-eligible households (under 60% of state median, ~$80–110K depending on family size): 100% completely free. We file the rebate; you sign once.

Am I income-eligible for free insulation?

Massachusetts uses 60% of state median income. Approximate thresholds: family of 2 under ~$80K, family of 4 under ~$110K, family of 6 under ~$140K. Verified during the Home Energy Assessment with one tax document. Mass Save confirms in 3–5 business days.

Is air sealing actually free in Massachusetts?

Often yes. Air sealing performed alongside the Home Energy Assessment is frequently free as a Mass Save program lead-in. The HEA team caulks attic penetrations, weatherstrips door and window frames, and seals rim joists during the assessment visit at no cost.

Are you BPI / RESNET certified?

Yes. Building Performance Institute (BPI) and RESNET (Residential Energy Services Network) certifications are required for Mass Save weatherization. We hold both in-house. Without these certifications, a contractor cannot file Mass Save weatherization rebates.

What if asbestos is found in my home?

Common in pre-1978 Massachusetts homes — insulation, popcorn ceilings, vinyl asbestos tile, pipe wrap. Asbestos must be professionally removed before insulation work can proceed. We hold the Massachusetts asbestos abatement license and handle MA DEP-compliant disposal as a separate scope.

Should I insulate before or after a heat pump install?

Insulate first. Insulation can shrink your heat pump load 30–40%, which means a smaller heat pump (lower install cost), smaller electricity bill (forever), and often a better rebate stacking pattern. We always recommend the Home Energy Assessment as step 1 before HVAC sizing.

How long does Massachusetts insulation take to install?

Attic insulation: 4–8 hours for typical 1,500 sq ft home. Wall insulation (drill-and-fill blown-in): 1–2 days. Spray foam basement or crawl space: 1 day. Whole-home weatherization (attic + walls + basement + air sealing): 2–4 days.
